Political direct mail for voter contact, absentee chase, and GOTV

Campaign direct mail printing in three postcard sizes

Campaign direct mail printing starts with a decision most campaigns get backwards: size drives postage more than it drives message. A larger piece that crosses a USPS rate boundary can cost more in postage than it cost to print. Union printed direct mail is available in three sizes chosen around those boundaries, so you can buy space deliberately instead of by accident. Every size supports single or double sided printing, and the union bug is available on all of them at no surcharge.

Printing only. Postage is quoted separately once your list is processed and the presort level is known. Under 10,000 addressed pieces orders directly in the store; above that, use the quote form.

Upload your artwork and list, and order political direct mail in minutes

Direct mail has one more step than any other campaign product: your list has to be processed before it can be presorted and priced. That processing is what keeps you from paying postage on voters who moved away two years ago. If you need artwork specifications, the Campaign Print Guide covers every product we carry.

How many pieces, and when do they need to land?

Mail is planned by household, not by voter — a three-voter household gets one piece per drop unless you are deliberately mailing individuals. Size your universe to your persuasion and turnout targets, not to your full voter file. Then decide how many touches that universe gets across the cycle. Three well-targeted drops to a tight universe beat one thin mailing to everyone.

Count backward from the in-home date, not from Election Day.
A GOTV piece that lands the Wednesday after the election cost you the entire drop. Working backward from the day you want it in the voter’s hand: allow mail transit,
then 5 business days production from artwork approval, then list processing, then your own artwork sign-off. Most campaigns are surprised by how early that puts the order.

Order every drop at once.
Campaigns that place a single order for all their cycle drops lock in pricing, hold their production slots, and stop competing with every other race in the state for the same
press time in the final three weeks. Artwork for later drops can be supplied on a schedule.

Frequently asked questions about
My Union’s campaign direct mail services

Campaign direct mail has two costs, and campaigns that only budget one run out of money in October. Printing scales down sharply with quantity — see the table above. Postage is set by USPS, varies by class, size, weight, and presort level, and is quoted separately once your list is processed. Budget both from the start. A piece that saves a penny in printing and adds a nickel in postage is a bad trade at any volume.

Both routes work, and they are good at different things. Addressed mail uses your voter file and lets you target individual households by party, propensity, or vote history — necessary for any primary, and for persuasion universes in a general. EDDM saturates every address on a chosen carrier route with no list at all, which is efficient in local races where the carrier route lines up closely with the precinct. Many campaigns run both: addressed mail for persuasion, EDDM for saturation.

Set the in-home date first, then count backward: mail transit, plus 5 business days production from artwork approval, plus list processing, plus your own sign-off time. Typical windows are persuasion mail landing three to four weeks out, early voting mail landing just before the window opens, and GOTV mail landing the final weekend. The Campaign Calendar maps these against a full cycle.

No — printing and postage are separate lines, always. Postage depends on mail class, piece dimensions, weight, and how deeply the mailing presorts, none of which are known until your list is processed. Request a quote and you will see both numbers before you commit to anything.

Almost always. Federal candidates and committees follow FEC disclaimer rules, and most states impose their own requirements on state and local races — including specific placement, size, and wording. Build the paid-for line into your artwork before you upload it. We print exactly what you send. Confirm your wording with your compliance counsel or your state election office; a mailing that has to be reprinted for a disclaimer error is the most expensive mistake in campaign print.

Yes. The union bug is available on every direct mail order — no surcharge, no minimum. It sits in the lower corner of the piece. If your artwork is already built, we place it at checkout; if you are unsure where it goes, our team positions it for you. Very few full-service mailers can put a union bug on an addressed, presorted, drop-shipped mail piece. That combination is the reason to run your mail here.

VOLUNTEER REACH

Campaign Door Hangers

The doors your volunteers actually reach. Campaign door hangers stay at the door through Election Day and carry your GOTV ask where mail already softened the ground. Mail covers the universe; hangers close the walk.

FACE-TO-FACE CONTACT

Campaign Palm Cards

The volunteer carry. Campaign palm cards travel to every event, rally, and open door, putting the same message in the voter’s hand that your mail put in their box. Same artwork, different moment.

Campaign Print Bundles

Campaign print bundles put your signs, hangers, palm cards, and stickers on one order, so you lock production slots for the whole cycle instead of re-entering the queue every three weeks.

More about running a political mail program

Let postage decide, then fit the message. The smallest size mails at the lowest postcard rate and is the right call for high-volume ID and GOTV drops where reach matters more than real estate. The mid-size piece stays inside USPS letter dimensions while roughly doubling your message area — the standard for persuasion and comparison mail. The largest size crosses into flat rates and exists mainly to qualify for EDDM saturation.

Every Door Direct Mail delivers your piece to every address on a chosen USPS carrier route without any mailing list. It fits school board, city council, and ward-level races where the carrier route closely matches the precinct and where near-universal name recognition is the goal. It is a poor fit for a primary, where you want only your own party’s high-propensity voters and where mailing everyone means paying to reach voters who cannot vote for you.

Ballot chase mail targets voters who requested an absentee or mail ballot and have not returned it yet. It carries the return deadline, drop-off locations, and one clear instruction — nothing else. Because the target list refreshes daily as ballots come in, chase mail runs as a short, fast drop on a tight in-home window, and it is the highest-conversion mail most campaigns will send. Plan the artwork weeks ahead so the only variable at drop time is the list.

Yes. Variable data printing lets each piece carry its own polling location, early voting site, ballot status language, or targeted message, pulled from a column in your file. Include those fields as columns in your list and name which column drives which element on the piece. This is what makes a chase program work at scale — 30,000 pieces, each one telling a specific household where and by when.

Plan by household, not by voter — a three-voter household gets one piece per drop unless you are deliberately mailing individuals, which roughly triples cost. Most competitive campaigns run three to five touches to their persuasion universe across the cycle, with the final two concentrated in the last three weeks. Fewer, better-targeted drops consistently outperform one thin mailing to a universe you could not afford to mail properly.

Mail reaches every targeted household with no volunteers, no walk lists, and no weather. Door hangers require someone to physically walk the door, which caps reach at whatever your volunteer program can actually cover — but the voter has to remove the piece to get inside, so attention runs higher. Mail scales past your field capacity. Door hangers close the doors your field can reach. Programs with money but no volunteers lean toward mail; programs with volunteers but no money lean toward hangers.

Yes. Entering mail deeper into the postal network, closer to the delivery area, shortens transit time and narrows the in-home window from a vague week to a predictable couple of days. For a persuasion drop three weeks out that precision is nice to have. For a final-weekend GOTV piece it is the whole ballgame. Use the quote form to price deeper entry for your specific district.

Usually not, and this surprises a lot of first-time treasurers. Nonprofit Marketing Mail rates are limited to qualified nonprofit organizations that hold a current USPS authorization. Candidate committees and most political committees do not hold one and mail at commercial rates. Budget commercial postage unless your organization already has that authorization on file — and if you do, tell us up front so the mailing is prepared under the right permit.

Print-ready PDF is preferred; high-resolution JPG at 300 dpi with full bleed is accepted. Two things trip up mail artwork specifically: the address block area must stay clear of artwork and dark backgrounds so the address is machine-readable, and the indicia area must stay open. Supply your list as CSV or Excel with one column per field and headers in the first row. Full specifications are in the Campaign Print Guide.

USPS treats political and election mail as distinct categories during a cycle and tags them at entry so postal facilities can identify and track the volume. Mail from candidates and committees is identified as Political Mail; official materials sent by election officials are identified as Election Mail. The tagging happens on the containers at the dock — it is our job, not something you place on your artwork. What you owe on the artwork is your disclaimer.

Reorders print in the same 5-business-day window as new orders. Your artwork stays on file in your store account — log in, find the order, click Reorder Design, and check out. The one difference from other products: a new or updated list still needs processing before the drop, so a reorder to a refreshed universe is not instant. See the Campaign Reordering Guide if you have not used the reorder flow before.
